Ahh…I fancy leather chairs myself.  Soft and inviting, don't you think?

Oh!  Look above you my child, and you see some of my assistants and helpers.  Do you see them, going into the dark section of this forest?  Beautiful, aren't they?  The beings that you are seeing right now are angels.

You've probably heard of angels in your lifetime have you not?  Angels are quite popular with those who know them.  I wouldn't be surprised to know that.  In a way, angels are miniature versions of me, presented in a form that you can understand and fathom better then the infiniteness of me.

You would like to know more about angels?  Very well.  I will do my best to answer your questions.

You're wondering what these angels are doing, going into the dark part of the forest?  That is easy.  Do you think I leave the spirits in Hell without any assistance whatsoever?  That is silly.  I have entire legions of angels who are dedicated to going into hell and working to help people get out.

How does that work?  Simple.  Angels go into hell, and try to persuade a person to turn to the light, and towards me.  Angels go forth, whispering that you can turn to God at any time, that God will come and help you.  They tell those in hell that I do love them, and that I am here to help them.

How long do they do that?  As long as it takes.  As I never give up on working to help get people out of hell, so it is with the angels as well.

What's your next question?  Ah, you wish to know if there are levels of angels, as described in your medieval texts.  Yes, there are levels of angels, though not quite as you imagine them.  The first group of angels are those who work directly with you on earth.  These are guardian angels.  Every living thing on earth, including plants and animals, has at least one guardian angel with them at all times.  Even you.

What do guardian angels do?  These angels are not here to protect you from all harm.  Rather, hey are here to protect you from passing out of physical life before your earthly task is complete.  If something threatens you before it is your time to leave, then your angel will intervene to help you.  This happens often, and is often told about in your media.  You know, the stories where a person shows up out of nowhere to help in an emergency, then leaves quickly without a trace.

What else do guardian angels do?  They are friends of yours.  They love you just as I do, completely and unconditionally.  It may please you to know that angels love helping you as best they can.  They delight in helping guide you towards me, or to things that can help you in situations.  In a way, they are your personal assistants who are there to help you.

Before you ask, this does not mean that angels will tell you the winning lottery numbers.  Angels can't help you with everything!  But they can help you with many things.  Angels can help you find missing keys, help you get a parking spot, and offer emotional support when you ask for it. 

If you wish it, you can call upon angels to come and surround you when you are in danger or lonely.  There are infinitely many angels in existence who take enormous pleasure in helping others.  So don't feel ashamed to call upon one hundred angels to come and be with you if you are lonely. 

In your terms, angels are never unemployed.  They are constantly busy helping everyone who asks for assistance in everyday situations.  There is however, one rule that all angels follow.  An angel cannot help you (unless it is a life threatening emergency where you might die before it is your time to come home) unless you ask.  Until you ask the angels for help and assistance, they can only watch what is going on.  If you invite them to help you, they will instantly spring to work.

You must give permission to the angels to help you before they can do so.  The same goes for me.  I cannot directly interfere in your life unless you ask and give me permission to do so. 

Angels work much like I do, subtly arranging things and guiding you to people and places via thoughts, feelings, etc.  Very rarely do they directly come out and directly interfere with you.

Will you ever see an angel?  When you pass from this life, yes.  When someone passes over, there is always an angel there to greet them and comfort them.  Sometimes, in the case of those who are putting themselves in hell, they might not be aware of these angels, but they are there.

A level above guardian angels are the archangels.  These angels can best be described as guardians of nations and planets.  You know a few of them by name, like Michael and Gabriel.  There are many of these archangels.  And while they are big and powerful, they can still help you with your problems if you ask.

There are many other angel types in existence.  But always remember dear one, that these angels are here to help and assist you.  It brings them great pleasure to do so!  All you have to do is ask.
